What is setting and streaming?
Setting is the internal selection of pupils based on their ability in specific subjects.
The difference between setting and streaming is that streaming is based on a pupil’s overall ability across the entire curriculum, whereas setting is based on their ability in a given subject.
To demonstrate how setting and streaming works, take two pupils: Alfie and Bea.
Alfie has a good general overall ability, excels in English but needs extra help and support in Maths. He would be put in a high stream because overall his academic ability is good, put in a high set for English but a lower set for Maths, where topics would be taught slower and he would receive support tailored to this need.
Bea struggles academically but excels in Science. She would be put in a lower stream because of her overall ability, but a high set for Science.
